Volunteer Abroad in Tanzania

22nd of June 2009

GapGuru offers exciting voluntary work placements in Tanzania, Africa

Live Alongside local communities, Visit the Serengeti, For the fitter lot.. Climb Kili, but most importantly Make a Difference!

When many people think of Africa, they are actually thinking of Tanzania. It is one of the most beautiful and politically stable countries in East Africa. It contains some of Africa's finest game reserves (Ngorongoro, Serengeti) as well as the roof of Africa: Mount Kilimanjaro. From the palm-fringed sands of Zanzibar on the coast, to the fabulous bush scenery near Arusha, there is no better way to experience Africa in safe and happy surroundings.

With all this to offer, Tanzania also has wide spread poverty and HIV. Step In and make a different on your gap year, summer holiday or career break with GapGuru. The GapGuru projects are based around the lively towns of Arusha and Moshi. Arusha is the first stop on the northern safari circuit and is the undisputed safari capital of East Africa. It is a staging point for tourists hiking to Mount Kilimanjaro or visiting the Serengeti National Park. Moshi is more laid back and enjoys a beautiful location below Mount Kilimanjaro, with great views of the mountain.

You could be teaching primary school children or choose to work in a children’s home that houses children who are malnourished and abandoned or orphaned. Trainees in health care could support the HIV/AIDS awareness programmes or gain experience at a local hospital as part of the electives. Vocational training to provide youth a means for livelihood is something you can volunteer with.

Tanzanians are well known for their hospitality, and living in a local community means you’ll get invited to weddings and family celebrations as well as the chance to drink sweet tea in numerous houses. It is a fascinating destination to travel to – Tanzania promises you the trip of a lifetime!

Karibu Tanzania !!

Gapwork Gap Year Tips: When to visit Africa

If you're planning on making Africa a stop on your gap year, you'll probably be wondering about the best time to visit.  Africa's varying weather and climate is largely controlled by the continent's location astride the equator and the fact that it is almost equally in the Northern and Southern Hemisphere. To get reliable information on the best time to see the country you are planning to visit, we recommend you check a website focusing in that country. However, as a general rule of thumb, starting from the equator and working outwards:

  1. The climate near the equator is tropical, with high temperatures throughout the year and a rainy summer season.
  2. North and South of the equator the climate is semi-arid to arid - with the most extreme conditions found in the Sahara in the North and Kalahari in the South
  3. On the Northern and Southern coasts of Africa the climate is usually similar to the Mediterranean - with subtropical temperatures and a concentration of rainfall mostly in the autumn and winter months.
