Spend Time with Whales in Tenerife

5th of November 2009

The Atlantic Whale Foundation (AWF) is looking for volunteers to help staff their research station

The Atlantic Whale Foundation (AWF) works primarily towards helping to make Tenerife´s whale watching industry a global example of best practice.  Their core goal is to raise awareness of conservation threats facing our planet and ways in which any individual or small group can make a real difference through supporting one of the huge number of projects around the world.

If you are looking for a holiday with a difference or have a gap year or career break to plan you could consider Volunteering at the research station and on the whale watching boats in Arona, Tenerife - with enough time free to develop your own dreams.

The core volunteer programme runs from the research station in Arona. This facility is a charming old Canarian farm house which can accommodate up to twenty or so people. Volunteers will work as research guides on the whale watching boats three or so days per week and spend the rest of the time in the research room assisting where their skills lend best.  Weekends are free to engage in a range of activities or to explore the extraordinary island of Tenerife.

AWF have a strong expectation of volunteers and their attitude. There are no fixed start dates on the programme and volunteers can join when convenient.  AWF want volunteers committed to make the world a better place and preferably with ideas of specific projects/species they would like to support.

Tenerife is an extraordinary island, stunningly beautiful and with a strong south American culture uninterrupted by the tourism developments of the south. Volunteers must see it. There are also a huge number of educational activities that you can engage in, most at heavily discounted prices for volunteers.

Accommodation in Arona is provided free in the research station itself, 3-4 people in a room (more at busy times), and in surrounding properties. Breakfast and evening meals are provided and prepared by volunteers on a rota basis as are cleaning duties.

Gapwork Gap Year Tips: What is a Gap Year Volunteer?

Many people now want to volunteer overseas as part of their gap year. There are thousands of volunteer opportunities out there so the first thing you need to decide is what type of volunteer work you would like to do.  You don’t have to volunteer for a full year. Most gap year volunteer organisations run volunteering projects overseas and in the UK from a few weeks to a few months.

If you want to volunteer in Africa, for example, you could get volunteer work building villages or teaching in schools. You could even get a voluntary job where you work with animals - perfect if you're passionate about conservation. Lots of gap year organisations can organise the volunteer work for you. They will of course charge a fee for organising your volunteer job, but this usually includes your flight and their volunteering experience will help you get the volunteer job of your dreams.
