Going it alone in Canada
Our guide to finding a job under your own steam.
OK, so we've told you about companies who can help you get a visa and find a tempoary job in Canada. This page is for those of you who then want to go it alone (and there are plenty of people who successfully do just that every year!).
If you are going it alone, we recommend that you also read our section on Canadian Visas.
Once you have your visa, you can do any kind of work in Canada. The nature of the visa means however that, as a student or gap year traveller, you are likely to be looking for temporary work that doesn't require you to be fully qualified or very experienced.
Lots of backpackers go to Canada for the outdoor activities - skiing being the chief attraction - the ski resorts in Canada are full of working Brits putting up with a minimum wage and long hours in return for as much snow based activity as they can lay their skis on!
Canada's cities also offer plenty of opportunities for paid work with temp agencies or major employers. If you have good office skills then you can use them to earn a slightly higher wage, if you have hospitality experience then the cities may be a better bet than the mountain resorts where everyone is after the same job. Overall, the wages on offer are higher in the cities.
