Earthquakes and tsunamis in the Pacific

The Foreign Office has issued travel advice following the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Following the distastrous 8.9 magnitude earthquake that struck Japan earlier today, the Foreign Office has a list of countries to avoid travelling to. They also state that tsunami warnings are in place across the Pacific.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 8.9 struck 250 miles (400km) from Tokyo on 11 March. There continues to be a risk of aftershocks and tsunamis throughout Japan. You should contact the local authorities for advice, and stay away from coastal areas.

The new emergency phone number and FCO helpline in London is 020 7008 0000
