Gap Year FriendsTaking a gap year can be daunting especially if you have never travelled on your own before. You may feel apprehensive about turning up in a new country not knowing the language, culture or where exactly you are going! But, what you need to remember is that you aren’t alone as there will be many hundreds of other gap year travellers in the same situation as you.

The question of how to make friends may seem an easy one, but here we offer some advice on how to make new friends when travelling abroad:

  • If you want to meet people who that have similar interests and ideals to yours then you should look to volunteer and do some work in an area that you feel passionate about. This is a great way to work with new people both travellers and locals who have the same passion as you. Why not take a look at the types of gap year volunteering opportunities that are available.
  • Join an activity club such as one offering sport as this is a great way to socialise and meet people. For those of you who are sports mad then you can also look to do a sporting gap year in a country like Australia if you are very sports inclined.
  • Look to stay in hostels as these are a renowned way to meet new people and make friends especially if you stay in a dormitory style bedroom as you will want to get to know the people you are sleeping next to! And one of the best ways to get to know people in your hostel is to organise a night out as there is no better time to get to know people in a more relaxed and social environment.
  • Attend organised gap year travelling experiences and events as you are bound to meet people will similar interests.

It is important to remember that the effort you put in to making friends on a gap year is definitely worth it as the friends that you make on your gap year are often the ones that you will remember most fondly as you will share an experience and a place in the world that you may not share with anyone else again. It is important to get out and socialise when travelling as this will all add to how much you enjoy your gap year and you never know you may meet the man or woman of your dreams in the process!
