Middle East and India Scary Stuff

Beware, animals! Scary stuff you may run into.

Trust us, everything on this page is scary: we don't have to explain about scorpions, lions and rhino's; camels can spit; cows in India are sacred (which is scary if you think about it!) and dolphins ... well they are way too intelligent for our liking!

Here's a brief look at some of the animals you can expect to come across in the region.

Camels
Visit the Middle East and you're gauranteed to see camels, whether you take in a camel race (highly recommended!) or visit a local village. Camels were a major part of the development of the region and today they are still one of the most important animals, playing their part in tourism and (sadly) the food chain (camel meat is popular in the region). Not that scary, but man can they spit!

Cows
No page on India would be complete without a reference to the cow. You'll understand what we mean when you visit an Indian city and see a cow in the middle of the street with people just quietly walking by it! If you didn't already know, the cow is a sacred animal to Hindus.

Indian Rhinoceros
The Indian rhinoceros weighs up to 2,000 kilos and can be found in Northeast India. Other species of Rhinos found in India include the White Rhino, the Black Rhino and the Javan Rhino. We reckon you'd be pretty scared if any of them charged towards you!

Indian Lion
Sadly, the Gir National Park on the Gujarat peninsula in SW India is the only remaining habitat of this species. It is the most endangered large carnivore in the world ... and we think it's worth a mention. Feeling sad? Cheer yourself up by volunteering on a conservation placement!

Ganges River Dolphin
The Ganges River Dolphin or Gangetic Dolphin is a freshwater dolphin that is found primarily in the River Ganges.

Scorpions!
Their reputation proceeds them, but they are in fact less dangerous than Hollywood would have you believe. Mostly seen at night, there are 1,200 species in the world of which only 20 are seen as life threatening to humans. Still, we challenge you not to panic if you see one!
