Raleigh International

Raleigh International

Unique overseas Community projects to remember.

"We helped construct a community centre in the secluded village of Carona, which could only be reached via a 20km walk along a beach. The people were hugely welcoming, warm and friendly and everybody was truly sad when it came to leaving. It was a wonderfully rare and unbelievable experience."

Ayesha Khan, Costa Rica and Nicaragua 2007 expedition.

Raleigh International is a well-established charity with over 23 years experience providing adventure and challenge expeditions for people from all backgrounds, nationalities and ages, especially young people.

A taste of what’s ahead on a four week environmental project:

Malaysia

"It has been great to get to know both the host country participants and the locals on the projects and to appreciate the way they live their lives - in terms of customs, values and what issues are important to them." Chris Burnie, Malaysia 2007 expedition

You will have the opportunity to experience first hand how communities in the Borneon state of Sabah live. As well as contributing to education or water projects, you will also organise community activities such as a sports day for the village and may be invited into the local’s houses.

Costa Rica or Nicaragua

Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the Western hemisphere and natural disasters have contributed to a severe lack of community infrastructure. Raleigh is helping improve living standards in some of its remotest communities by constructing fresh water systems and local school facilities. You will be living with villagers in the beautiful subsistence farming communities of the Miraflor reserve, learning Spanish and enjoying a unique cross cultural experience. In Costa Rica, you will be working in partnership with indigenous communities to improve the health and educational services in the Indigenous Reserves.

India

Raleigh are launching expeditions to India from the beginning of 2008. On a community project, you will be helping to improve the quality of life for rural communities; in the areas of health and educational services. You will live and work with the locals and gain a rare glimpse in to their primitive lives which will be much improved by your contribution.

Why choose Raleigh International?

Raleigh International has a permanent field base in each expedition country enabling them to build long-term partnerships with the government, NGOs and local communities and thus deliver projects that meet a genuine need and are sustainable. Thanks to their partnerships they often work in national parks and areas which other tourists don’t have access to.

You will be joining volunteers from all over the world, including the host country, for a true exchange of cultures. Working in a team, you will develop problem-solving and leadership skills to help you stand out from the crowd.

Raleigh International runs expeditions to Costa Rica and Nicaragua, Malaysia and India for 10 to 4 weeks throughout the year. If you have more time to spare, why not choose from Raleigh’s unique combination of environmental and community projects, plus an adventure challenge? If you are aged 17-24, join an expedition as a venturer.

Those aged, 25+ can apply as volunteer managers to help lead and facilitate the expeditions for young people.
