Summer Work in Tenerife
By J Lester
I went over to Playa de Las Americas in Tenerife with some mates in April last year on a package holiday, I was at the time thinking about what I was going to do that summer (I was in my first year at Uni) - I hadn't taken a gap year after leaving school and I did fancy working abroad that summer. Anyway, I met some good people whilst there and managed to get some job contacts who recommended I came back in early the summer.
So, feeling a little nervous, I went back in June to look for summer holiday work - I think it was a good job I had already met some people as it wasn't as easy as I thought! Within the week though I had secured some bar work in a nice bar right on the beach - the problem was they didn't want me for the first two weeks! Luckily I had brought enough money and found some temporary work as a PR handing out flyers - basically standing outside a club persuading people to come in. Thank God that was only for 2 weeks as it was exhausting, hard work for 6 hours at a time pretty much without a break - and the equivalent pay was about £25 for the nights work!
Accommodation wise, when I arrived the only place I could find to stay was a hostel at about £12 a night, but once I started working in the bar (what a welcome relief that was!) I found an apartment with a few people I'd met which worked out a lot cheaper. All in all working a summer in Tenerife was a great experience which I'd recommend to anyone - I made friends that I still keep in contact with and spent a whole summer in the sun!
If you plan to do the same, don't head out anywhere unless you have enough money saved up to fall back on - seriously it's not that easy finding work and some of the easier jobs to come by won't earn you enough for a days food and drink!
One other huge advantage, now I have experience working a whole summer, jobs are easier to get abroad - this summer I'm working as a club rep in Ibiza!
