Getting a Summer Job in a UK Theme Park

Finding a temporary job in a theme park in the UK is a popular option for students and travellers. The top theme parks such as Alton Towers, Thorpe Park and Legoland Windsor are great places to find customer service jobs, but there are many other smaller local attractions that will employ young people at different times during the year. While many theme parks and attractions are closed during the winter months, if you time your job application right, to coincide with recruitment for the start of the season or the peak summer season, you should be able to find job vacancies and opportunities at Camelot, Gullivers World, Chessington World of Adventure and Drayton Manor, as well as Alton Towers, Thorpe Park and Legoland Windsor. Alton Towers for example, is looking for seasonal staff to work from March to November.

So what kind of jobs can you expect to find at UK theme parks and visitor attractions? Well, obviously there are the "front of house" type jobs which involve staffing the rides, the box office, car parks, restaurants and cafes. Alton Towers has hotels on site and a golf course, all of which recruit for staff. There are also the behind the scenes jobs including site maintenance, security and housekeeping. In short, you can expect to find most job opportunities in the tourism and leisure industries at a theme park, so decide what kind of position you are looking for in advance of application. You will also need to decide in advance what your commitment will be, as parks tend to recruit for seasonal, permanent and work experience positions. Due to the temperamental British weather, most parks gear up for recruitment in the summer, but some, like Alton Towers, run Halloween events for example, who need wannabe actors to dress up and scare people!

The types of temporary work available at places like Thorpe Park or Alton Towers mean that the management are looking for certain kinds of people with particular skill sets. You will need to be:

  • customer focussed with a willing and helpful attitude
  • friendly and approachable
  • smart and presentable
  • reliable and committed
  • punctual
  • happy to work as part of a team
  • with great communication skills
Ideally you will also have some customer service experience, references and any relevant qualifications such as first aid or health and safety. The main thing though is that you will add to the experience of the customer at the theme park or attraction - you will help make their day!

Jobs at Thorpe Park and other attractions are competitive, but you stand a better chance of finding work if you apply in plenty of time and have a great up to date CV to hand in, which clearly highlights your experience and skills. Most theme parks and resorts have an online application process which is easy to complete. Once you have submitted your application follow it up and keep in touch with the recruitment team to show you are keen.

Working at a theme park or tourist attraction as a summer job or temporary position offers you the chance to meet great people, improve your customer service skills, get work experience and earn some extra cash. Take a look at our temporary jobs page to find out more.
